The Africa Eco Race: The Race to DakarHydra Films2019-06-03T16:51:05+01:00
This was one of the most ridiculous projects I have ever worked on… in the best possible way. This is a 2-week rally race, following the original Dakar Rally route from France, through Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania and finishing in Dakar, Senegal. Made up of racing teams in different categories including cars, buggies, motorbikes and trucks, I followed the entire race mounting on-board cameras to selected vehicles and stopping off along the way and at the finish/start lines to get beautiful aerial imagery that made it into the live broadcast to Eurosport every night.
Kit: DJI Inspire 2, DJI Mavic Pro.
Flight: Over the 2.5 weeks, a huge number of flights were successfully completed. Stopping off surrounded by some of the most incredible landscapes, not to mention the camels. The main thing we had to contend with was the wind. In Mauritania relentless wind made it almost impossible to fly during the middle of the day unless we found sheltered areas. The mornings before 9am and evenings after 7pm are when it became much calmer. Still, we managed it and the race organisers and show editors were absolutely stunned by some of the footage we were able to get! A great experience and I hope to be involved in it next year!
